Alejandro Colunga
Alejandro Colunga Marín was born on December 11, 1948, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He is a self-taught painter and sculptor, recognized for his expressionist style imbued with humor, symbolism, and fantasy. Before dedicating himself entirely to art, he studied Architecture and Tourism between 1968 and 1971, as well as Music at the School of Music of the University of Guadalajara between 1971 and 1973. He also explored disciplines such as anthropology and the study of languages, which enriched the conceptual depth of his work.
Influenced by figures such as Rufino Tamayo, Colunga has developed a personal artistic language that places him within the tradition of Latin American Surrealism. His work stands out for its playful, dreamlike, and symbolic nature, where the fantastic and the grotesque intertwine to create unique visual universes. His affinity with artists such as Francis Bacon and Jacobo Borges has been noted by critics due to the expressive power that emanates from his compositions.
Since 1968, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Mexico, the United States, Europe, and South America. His work is held in important private collections and contemporary art museums. One of his most emblematic works is *La Rotonda del Mar*, a series of bronze sculptures installed on the Malecón in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, which has become a cultural icon of the area.
For over five decades, Alejandro Colunga has built a solid career as a multidisciplinary artist. Although he began as a painter, he has increasingly delved into sculpture, exploring new forms of expression through materials such as bronze.
