Ana Luisa Rébora

Ana Luisa Rébora was born on January 31, 1962, in Guadalajara, Jalisco. She began taking painting classes at the age of three, and at eight she received the Jalisco Children's Prize. Her first solo exhibition was in 1979, and since then she has participated in more than 80 group and solo exhibitions in Mexico, Europe, and the United States, establishing herself as a key figure in contemporary art from Jalisco.

A self-taught artist, she complemented her artistic practice in workshops at the University of Guadalajara. Throughout her career, she has developed her own unique style, characterized by the presence of ghostly female figures enveloped in atmospheres of mist and light. Her painting moves between abstraction, surrealism, and symbolic figuration, where color—sometimes vibrant, sometimes sepia or ochre—becomes an emotional vehicle.

She has exhibited in important venues such as the Diego Rivera Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Guadalajara, Galería Uno in Puerto Vallarta, and museums in Norway, Germany, Denmark, and the Dominican Republic. In 2005, she was awarded the Kondelureskogen certification in Norway, joining a select group of artists from that country. Queen Sonja of Norway acquired one of her works after an exhibition in Oslo.

The female figure is central to her work. Solitary women, seen from behind or faceless, emerge from dreamlike atmospheres, mists, or sands, symbolizing introspection, resilience, and the spiritual quest. Over time, these figures have gained vitality, confronting the viewer and moving toward more luminous landscapes. Her style has evolved toward a plastic synthesis where the pictorial space is reduced to light, gesture, and the symbolic energy of the human body.

In his technical exploration, he has worked with collage, printmaking, mixed media, monotypes, and unconventional materials such as marble and quarry stone. However, he always returns to painting as his essential medium: “I prefer a painting to be 100 percent paint,” he states. His vision is clear: “Art is a complete surrender, a quest, a chaos… a daily dawn.” He has lived in Norway since 1998, where he continues to develop and exhibit his work.
