Carmen Bordes

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco in 1952, Carmen Bordes is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts at the University of Guadalajara. For over 40 years, she has developed a solid artistic career focused on printmaking and painting, techniques she masters with depth, both in their expressive and technical dimensions. She has been awarded important prizes, including First Place in Printmaking at the Salón de Octubre and the Cuitzmala Competition, as well as the Acquisition Prize at the Encuentro de la Gráfica.

Her work has been exhibited in national and international galleries and museums, including the Ex Convento del Carmen, Galería Margritte, Galería Alejandro Gallo, the Sapporo International Print Biennial in Japan, and the Bilbao Print Biennial in Spain. Furthermore, she has established herself as an educator by founding a printmaking school that continues to foster new generations of graphic artists.

In her works, Carmen Bordes combines figuration with symbolic and everyday elements, exploring themes such as memory, the passage of time, and the psychological dimension of her subjects. Portraiture has been one of her preferred genres, crafted with a sensitivity that transcends the physical to suggest emotional, historical, and cultural states, as demonstrated in her series dedicated to emblematic figures of Guadalajara's cultural life.

A fundamental part of his career includes his stay in Paris, where he studied and worked at the renowned Atelier 17. His original intention was to take a one-month engraving course, but his stay extended to three years, during which time he perfected his technique and experienced a decisive stage of professional growth.

Carmen's work moves between the abstract and the surreal, employing figurative imagery enriched by visual metaphors and subtle symbols. Her compositions reveal a unique artistic language, with constant references to the urban environment, everyday objects, and faces that reflect fragments of Guadalajara's cultural history.

With a critical, poetic, and profoundly human vision, Carmen Bordes has left a significant mark on the visual arts of Jalisco. Her legacy lies not only in her works but also in her commitment to art education and the creation of spaces that promote graphic art as a vital form of expression.
