Jorge Monroy
Jorge Monroy, born in Morelia, Michoacán, in 1951, is one of the most important Mexican watercolorists of the second half of the 20th century. From a very young age, he showed a natural inclination towards art, which led him to enroll in the School of Visual Arts at the University of Guadalajara in 1968. There he studied under Tomás Coffeen, Francisco Rodríguez Caracalla, Jorge Martínez, and Alfonso de Lara Gallardo, who guided him in the watercolor technique, consolidating his style and mastery in this form of artistic expression.
His work, primarily landscapes, portrays urban, rural, coastal, and marine environments in Mexico, distinguished by its balance of light and transparency. Monroy has received numerous awards, including the "Golden Column" from the newspaper Ocho Columnas in 1991, the "Guadalajara Cultural Testimony" in 1998, and the "Silver Brush" at the October Festivals in 2011.
Monroy has held over 100 exhibitions, both solo and group shows, in Mexico, the United States, South America, England, and Belgium. His work has been published in cultural supplements, and he has illustrated books, magazines, and posters. In addition to watercolor, he has ventured into muralism, participating in the creation of murals alongside Alfonso de Lara Gallardo and developing his own projects such as "Under the Wings of Mercury" (2009) at the Chamber of Commerce and "Teuchitlán Tradition" (2012) at the Guachimontones Archaeological Zone.
With a career spanning more than five decades, Jorge Monroy continues to be a reference in Mexican painting, standing out for his impeccable technique and his ability to convey the essence of the landscape and human emotion through watercolor.
