Juan Zufiaur

Juan Zufiaur, born in Vitoria, Spain, in 1968, is a multidisciplinary visual artist who has developed his career between Spain and Mexico. He studied at the Fine Arts faculties of Granada and Valencia, specializing in engraving, metalwork, chalcography, woodcut, lithography, and serigraphy at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He also honed his painting and sculpture techniques at the José Antonio Díez Academy in Vitoria.

Since 1992, his work has been closely linked to Mexico, following his participation in an exhibition in Granada commemorating the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. This connection was strengthened when he received a scholarship from the Mexican Embassy to study the murals of José Clemente Orozco at the Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara, solidifying his admiration for Mexican muralism and the influences of Rivera, Siqueiros, and Orozco.

In 1999, Zufiaur presented the exhibition “Mexico, the Kingdom of Color” at the Sala Araba of Caja Vital in Vitoria, and returned to exhibit in his hometown in 2002. His work has been exhibited in multiple galleries and museums in Mexico, Spain and other countries, standing out for its combination of techniques and materials that reflect a vibrant dialogue between Basque and Mexican culture.

Zufiaur has also ventured into public art, creating the mosaic façade featuring a red bull for the Prime 1519 restaurant, and has collaborated with the tequila brand Círculo Tequila on a collection of six exclusive designs. His work reflects a constant exploration of cultural duality, creative freedom, and the vibrant colors of Mexican magical realism.

With a unique style and a vibrant color palette, Juan Zufiaur has consolidated an artistic career that merges his European roots with the cultural essence of Mexico, creating a bridge between two worlds through painting, sculpture, and engraving.
