María Fernanda Vargas
María Fernanda Vargas is a visual artist born in Guadalajara, Jalisco. With over twelve years of experience, she has built her career by combining academic training in Design from ITESO and a second degree in Visual Arts from the University of Guadalajara. From an early age, she showed a genuine interest in drawing and painting, disciplines she now complements with photography, screen printing, and engraving.
Her work is distinguished by its use of natural pigments, organic materials, and an intense, vibrant palette. With expressionistic strokes, her creations seek to convey positive energy, hope, and a profound connection with nature. Projects such as “Sacred Animals” and “Impossible Maps” have reflected this vision through mixed media, monotype, and the use of dyes like cochineal.
She has participated in more than 70 group exhibitions and 12 solo shows both in Mexico and abroad. Her international exhibitions include the Biennial of Contemporary Art in León, the Settimana della Cultura in Sicily, and her participation in the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. In 2023, she presented her work at the Museum of Journalism and Graphic Arts in Guadalajara alongside digital artist Carlos Garrett.
In addition to her career as an artist, María Fernanda runs Casa Murciélagos, a space in Guadalajara where she offers art workshops. She firmly believes in the value of art as a means of human and community connection, integrating sensory and educational experiences into her activities. She recently began a new project entitled “Territorios de Avefauna” (Territories of Birdlife), in which she experiments with bird feathers to create pigments and new forms of printing.
Vargas's work is distinguished by its commitment to exploring new material forms, aesthetic contemplation, and artistic research. Each of his pieces emerges from an introspective process, where journey, movement, and improvisation become key tools for developing a unique visual language that honors the biodiversity, culture, and soul of his environment.
