Mario Martín del Campo
Mario Martín del Campo was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in 1945, and has since developed a solid career in Mexican visual arts. He studied at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City and has worked in disciplines such as painting, sculpture, drawing, and object art. His style lies between fantastic realism and surrealism, with a technical approach that stands out for its expressive use of line, color, and light.
His most recent exhibition, “Light in the Line,” presented at the Manifesto Gallery in Guadalajara, brings together nearly 100 pieces that explore the power of the line as a fundamental expressive element. In it, the artist uses black paper with white ink to create contrasts that symbolize light in darkness, reinforcing his constant quest to imbue his work with content beyond the merely decorative.
Martín del Campo has defined his artistic process as a daily and dedicated endeavor that goes beyond fleeting inspiration. He works consistently, up to eight hours a day, in a total commitment to his craft. For him, creation is a vehicle for introspection and communication that allows him to contribute culturally to his community and transcend borders.
His works have been exhibited in Mexico and abroad, and are part of permanent collections in institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Montreal Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Mexican Art in San Francisco, the Omar Rayo Museum in Colombia, the Cabañas Cultural Institute and the National Heritage of Mexico.
Beyond genres, Mario Martín del Campo believes that painting should convey a message that invites reflection in the viewer. In his view, art is a channel for interpreting the real, the fantastic, and the symbolic, allowing each person the freedom to give it their own meaning.
