Mauricio Toussaint
Mauricio Toussaint, born in Guadalajara in 1960, is a painter and printmaker of Mexican and French descent. From an early age he showed an interest in art, but following his family's expectations, he entered the Autonomous University of Guadalajara to study Architecture, from which he graduated in 1985. During his studies, he was encouraged by the director of the Visual Arts program to explore his artistic side, which led him to participate in printmaking workshops at the Center for Modern Art and later at the Cabañas Cultural Institute, where he worked as a curatorial assistant.
In 1995, Toussaint won awards at the VII October Salon, taking first place in painting and second place in drawing. Shortly afterward, he moved to Miami, Florida, where he exhibited his work in local galleries. In 2000, he relocated to Tucson, Arizona, where he was part of the Dinnerware Artspace collective until 2004.
Her work, created using the encaustic technique (beeswax and natural pigments on amate paper and birch wood panels), is a symbolic exploration of spirituality, identity, and the concept of "home." Her compositions, characterized by layering and references to religious texts such as the Kabbalah, the Bible, and the Quran, reflect a personal quest to develop a unique narrative iconography.
Toussaint's art has been exhibited in various cities in Mexico, the United States, Spain, Korea, and France. His work has been described as a fusion of symbolism and abstraction, where the images emerge from deep introspection and a constant exploration of memory and personal experience.
With a career spanning more than 40 years, Mauricio Toussaint continues to explore new forms of expression and consolidate his work on the international art scene, establishing a constant dialogue between Mexican culture and his experience as an artist abroad.
