Miguel Ángel López Medina

Born on May 14, 1951, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Miguel Ángel López Medina began his artistic training at an early age at the School of Visual Arts of the University of Guadalajara, where he studied under teachers such as Tomás Coffeen, Francisco Rodríguez "Caracalla," and Jorge Martínez. He furthered his academic development at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the same university.

His work is characterized by an iconography populated by characters inhabiting dreamlike and magical realist settings. Angels, devils, witches, and dreamlike figures coexist in environments that, while fantastical, maintain a strong connection to the popular and the everyday. His painting is a dance between the mythical and the earthly, where the symbolic comes to life with artistic freedom.

In addition to her artistic career, she has taught at various institutions, including Preparatory School No. 3 of the University of Guadalajara and CEDART Guadalajara. She was a founding member of the Visual Research Workshop (TIV), where she collaborated with artists such as Martha Pacheco and Salvador Rodríguez, and also participated in collectives such as Olinka and Tenamaztli.

Between 1989 and 1996, she lived in France, where she participated in traveling cultural projects in cities such as Marseille, Bordeaux, Angoulême, and Paris. Her work has been widely exhibited, with solo exhibitions at important venues such as the Ex Convento del Carmen, the Goethe Institute, the Teatro Degollado, the Carlos Ashida Gallery, Galería 16 in Zurich, and the Château de Lavardens in France.

She has also participated in group exhibitions in Mexico, Austria, Portugal, the Netherlands, England, and the United States. Her work has been included in key publications such as “Four Centuries of Painting from Jalisco” and the “Directory of Contemporary Art from Jalisco.” Important critics such as Guillermo Samperio and Javier Ramírez have praised her painting style, noting her ability to capture a vibrant and immersive symbolic energy.

Miguel Ángel López Medina has built a solid and respected career, both for his artistic production and his work as an educator. With a unique visual language that draws on Mexican folklore, mythology, and popular culture, he has made a significant contribution to contemporary art in Jalisco from a poetic, free, and profoundly human perspective.
