Victor Hugo Perez
Víctor Hugo Pérez (Guadalajara, Jalisco, 1975) is a Mexican painter and sculptor whose work is characterized by vigorous expressionism, a visual imagery rich in color, and a constant exploration of the everyday environment from a symbolic and deeply emotional perspective. Initially trained at the Cabañas Cultural Institute and later self-taught, he has developed a solid career spanning more than 25 years of artistic production.
Since her first solo exhibition in Guadalajara in 1993, she has participated in numerous exhibitions in museums and galleries in Mexico, Europe, and the United States. Among her most notable exhibitions are The Bird of Wishes (MUSA, University of Guadalajara), Instinct (Museum of Contemporary Art of San Luis Potosí and MUPO Oaxaca), Females (with Juan Carlos Macías), and Plasma (with Raúl Cerrillo), as well as Imperivm in Leipzig, Germany, alongside artists such as Damien Hirst and Daniel Buren.
Pérez's work combines painting, ceramic sculpture, wood carving, and bronze, with a style that ranges from figurative to expressionist to naive. His compositions feature a wealth of symbolic animals such as dogs, cats, and birds, as well as portraits of women in scenes that allude to both historical references in art and the artist's own emotional world.
Their hand-carved frames, often painted or gilded, function as conceptual extensions of their works, bringing the painting into the viewer's real world. This interaction with viceregal, medieval, and pre-Hispanic art strengthens the primitive and original character of their approach.
Víctor Hugo Pérez has been included in important collections such as that of the Museum of Arts of the University of Guadalajara, the Jalisco People's Collection of the Cabañas Cultural Institute, the International Museum of Art of the Black Coffee Gallery Foundation, the Ateneo de Yucatán Museum of Contemporary Art (MACAY), the National Museum of Mexican Art in the United States and the Payment in Kind collection of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit.
He currently resides in Guadalajara, where he continues to work from his studio on a body of work that, as he himself describes it, seeks to be "primordial": direct, emotional, and profoundly human.
